Coast to coast
Travel Info > Roadtrips in New Zealand > “Coast to Coast”
This trip makes for some incredibly diverse landscapes, excellent twisty roads and couple of hot pools along the way that ensure you get home smiling. We usually aim for Punakaiki as the first overnight stop because, unfortunately, Greymouth lives up to its name (of being Grey and a bit dull…), but in reality, you can stay the night at any of these small towns along the way and have a great experience with West-Coasters.
The West Coast of NZ grew popular due to gold rushes back in the day, so you can even try your luck at gold panning along the way - maybe you might find a nugget big enough to get than new GS1300?

Approximately 300 kilometers
The ride kicks off with a smooth cruise out of Christchurch on SH73. The road winds through farmlands before climbing into the Southern Alps. Along the way:
Arthur’s Pass: As you ascend into the heart of the Southern Alps, take a breather at Arthur’s Pass Village. Stretch your legs, grab a coffee, and soak in the stunning alpine scenery.
Otira Viaduct: This engineering marvel offers spectacular views of the rugged landscape. Pull over for a quick photo-op and marvel at the dramatic drop below.
Greymouth: A great spot for a lunch break. Enjoy some local seafood.
From Greymouth, continue up the stunning West Coast to Punakaiki, home of the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. This stretch is full of scenic coastal views that will make your ride unforgettable.

Approximately 130 kilometers
