Ready to embark on an epic journey through some of New Zealand’s most stunning landscapes?

Buckle up (or rather, helmet on), because we’re taking you on a 5-day glacial tour that’ll have you riding high through mountains, valleys, and alongside some seriously spectacular glaciers. Here’s our day-by-day guide for a memorable loop ride from Christchurch back to Christchurch, covering Hokitika, Franz Joseph, Fox Glacier, Wanaka, Mt Cook, and all the glorious spots in between.

Allow 5-6 days of riding just to get around, plus a few more if you want to see some sights along the way!

  • Approximately 250 kilometers
Smooth, scenic roads with winding sections around Arthur’s Pass.

    Along the way:

Waimakariri River: Ride alongside this braided river and soak in the stunning views of the Southern Alps in the distance. Perfect spot for a quick photo op.

Castle Hill: Stop to explore this unique landscape filled with limestone rock formations. It’s like something out of a fantasy movie!

Hokitika Gorge: Make a detour to witness the vibrant turquoise waters of this stunning gorge. A short walk from the car park will reward you with breathtaking views.

  • Approximately 160 kilometers
Coastal and forested roads, generally smooth but with some narrow sections. Enjoy a sensational series of windy turns before Fox Glacier. Watch for surface flooding during high rainfall.

    Along the way:

Franz Josef Glacier: Stop in at Franz Josef, where you can take a walk or a helicopter tour to see the glacier up close.

Lake Matheson: Just a short ride from Fox Glacier, take a walk around Lake Matheson for some of the best reflections of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman.

Fox Glacier: Explore the glacier area on foot or with a scenic flight. The rugged beauty here is something else.

  • Approximately 260 kilometers
Varied roads with some winding sections and stunning coastal views.

    Along the way:

Haast Pass: Enjoy the winding roads and scenic beauty as you ride through this iconic pass. Waterfalls and rivers abound, making for a picturesque journey.

Blue Pools: A short walk from the Haast Pass Highway, these crystal-clear pools are unreal (unless it’s been raining, in which case they’ll be a murky blue-grey).

Lake Wanaka: Take in the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Don’t miss the iconic Wanaka Tree.

  • Approximately 200 kilometers
Mostly smooth roads with some curves and undulations. Assuming it’s summer, Lindis Pass makes for some exceptional riding.

    Along the way:

Puzzling World: For a bit of fun, visit this quirky attraction with its illusion rooms and maze.

Lindis Pass: Ride through this high mountain pass with its rolling tussock-covered hills. The views are spectacular.

Mt Cook Village: Detour to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. Take a hike or a scenic flight to see New Zealand’s highest peak.

Omarama Clay Cliffs: Explore these other-worldly rock formations that are seemingly melting before your eyes. Make sure you have $5 cash handy for admission at the gate.

  • Approximately 330 kilometers
Single-lane highway, mainly straight riding from Fairlie onwards.

    Along the way:

Lake Tekapo: Stop by this turquoise lake and visit the Church of the Good Shepherd. The night skies here are some of the clearest in the world, with an established Dark Sky Reserve. It makes for a good overnight stay option, with hot pools too.

Farlie: Stretch your legs and grab one of these best-known pies in the South Island from the Farlie Bakehouse. The roads around here are cruisy but there are often campervans and other traffic making it slower driving.

Christchurch: Return to Christchurch, completing your epic journey. Time to share your stories and photos with fellow Tiki Tourers!
